From 20-28 July, the Mesh International Youth Arts Festival happened again and I ran the writing group. Great young team of writers who literally buzzed with energy and ideas. I also got to see some great plays and dance performances from around the world. The best bit for me was the street theatre and parade – each of the nine countries involved had their own special bird/ bird costumes and song. So, the Oxford group had Rockin’ Robin, the Leiden group had McCartney’s Blackbird, the Thai group had a music piece connected to their bird which was a pheasant, the Croatians had storks, the Russians had the phoenix (music was Stravinsky’s Firebird). We sang and danced (sanced, in fact) through the streets of Oxford for two hours – terrific party atmosphere. I felt 20 again. A great privilege to be part of it all.
