Student feedback on Alan Buckley’s Day School

I came away from the workshop feeling more strongly than ever that writing poetry is an important activity, and all our efforts, however approximate, are helping maintain a vital art form… Andrew Dixon

Alan Buckley’s exemplary and inspirational Day School on Writing at Risk produced a huge response from participants…
‘You asked for feedback on Alan Buckley’s workshop.
I found it one of the best workshops I have attended. Of course each workshop has a different intention but Alan’s was as interesting for the mood it created as for the content. There was a seriousness and openness in the discussion that emphasised (celebrated?) the act of writing poetry. We were not talking particularly about ‘getting published’ and all those ‘what’s the view from where you are?’ issues, but about the thinking, the craft, the perseverance that goes into producing a worthwhile poem. I came away from the workshop feeling more strongly than ever that writing poetry is an important activity, and all our efforts, however approximate, are helping maintain a vital art form. I could go on….You can tell I got a lot out of the day.

‘I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed Saturday with Alan Buckley’s wonderful session – he was interesting, inspiring, and I felt I got a lot of out of it. I have just ordered his book ‘Shiver’ and Andrew McMillan’s ‘Physical’ as well. Thank you for organizing a lovely day.’

‘I thought Alan was excellent and the group really buzzed. I had an inspiring day and can’t think of any aspect which could be improved. Thank you!’

‘Thank you so much for organising yesterday’s day school – it was excellent. I enjoyed Alan’s selection of poems to think about, and had a good time partnered for discussion with Romola Parrish whom I knew from Ty Newydd.’

‘What a fabulous day school. I really enjoyed it.’

‘Thank you so much for organising todays day school. I thought Alan Buckley amazing. I think few, if any, left without a lot of very constructive thoughts to work on. I just wish he’d brought some pamphlets or book for us to buy/go home with.’

‘Thank you for arranging the course with Alan Buckley which was one of the most helpful and inspiring I’ve been to. Through a quiet build-up of ideas and the careful scrutiny of fine poems (which was so enjoyable!) he brought us back to what poetry is and why we write. I will return to my notes and the poems again and again and words like, ‘risk’ and ‘honesty’ will stay with me.

‘One of the best things that came out of the day was the review of our own poetry that he got us to write. My own hard-headed summary of what I need to do to move on surprised me. It was generated almost entirely by what had gone before in the morning’s talk and discussion and I feel it will be incredibly useful. (It won’t make writing any easier, but at least I’ll know where I’m trying to get to).

‘There are many other things I shall take away from the course – articles, reviews, books, quotations, ideas, stories, psychology, which Alan Buckley so generously gave us from his own love of the subject and his wide knowledge and understanding. I had to rush off at the end, so I don’t know whether he brought copies of his own books for us to buy – I’ll certainly try to get hold of one.’
